  3. Tempted as one might be to react with a knee-jerk response and come to conclusions such as cricketers play for the money involved and not for the country, on account of a loss in one tournament, one must really refrain from doing so, or atleast think twice. It's one thing to be critical of a bad performance, but questioning someone's love towards his country is really not in good taste.
As for the issue of players endorsing products, it can't be viewed as a distraction simply because players earn a lot more (these days atleast)playing cricket and enjoy better incentives winning matches than appearing in a commercial ad. I do agree that the choice of certain products that these players endorse leaves a lot to be desired of them since they are seen as role models. But thats a topic for another discussion another day.
Most of these players would've come from lower middle class family. So it would be really hard to ignore the lure of easy money earned from a thirty second commercial. It's human tendency.

Money is involved in every sport, some of the most viewed, followed and discussed sports involve BIG BUCKS.
    Let's put this into perspective-
    A few cases in point
    1. Tennis
    Not played for the country.
Players end their careers earning dollars in multiples of 10 million.
Players conveniently skip davis cup ties, and until quite recently, even the olympics on the pretext of an injury so as to save their best for a forthcoming grand slam.

    2. Golf-
Lesser said the better about this sport. Waste of land, waste of time, skill etc.
But one of the richest sports around. Again not played for the country.

    3. Football
Enjoys the lion's share of popularity among all sports.
Apart from the world cups and continental cups very litlle international games played.
Players are known to end their international career prematurely in order to prolong their career at the club level.
Needless to say they get paid astronomical amounts as transfer fees, match fees etc.

    4. Formula 1
Not played for the country, huge money involved

Yet, we don't see people from their respecive nations baying for their blood, burning effigy or resorting to doubting their patriotism.

I can understand that people are passionate about cricket in India and thus, tend to be emotionally hurt when India loses in a major tournament, and that's exactly why people have the liberty to criticize the very players who would once have been the objects of their praise and affection.
But one can't really self righteously criticize the players when they themselves are doing precious little in terms of making the country proud.

People should get over these antiquated notions about cricket and cricketers. They have to realize that cricketers work as much hard honing their skills and perfoming at the highest level to the best of their potential as any other person from any other walk of life.

I can understand if someone blames dhoni for his tryst with the media before the tournament began and his obsession to draw people's attention towards him. They are pretty fair and aren't ugly. But you cannot question his loyalty towards the nation.

    Some ponits to ponder over

  4. I'm a big fan of cricket and couldn't just take these comments lying down. Sorry if I have hurt anybody. My intention was to guard the sport.
